The McKenzies

I was given an old box of photos a few years ago. It's an old slide projector case with a clasp and leather handle. When you open it the musty smell permeates the room almost to the point of being sickening. I sat on it (not literally) until yesterday.

It's a treasure chest of inspiration but I was torn because of how it came to me. It was left discarded along with a whole bunch of junk in a barn on some property that was donated to a national not-for-profit. I asked if the family was sure they didn't want it and was told that the family wanted nothing that was left on the property and the n-f-p had a big job of getting rid of it all.

I was still hesitant to do anything with it apart from sift through the photos and wonder about the people. There's a story in my family about an extended member who sold off his mother's house and everything in it including an entire trunk full of family photos and momentos. We lost an entire trunk full of family history because of pure carelessness. What if these people didn't know the case of photos was left behind? I thought about ways of using the photos without actually using the original but the result was that I didn't do a single thing with them and they stayed dormant in their enclosure for about 5 years.

This week I went down into my storage locker to kill some time by rearranging the space. As I shuffled things around I came across the black worn case and decided to pull it out and sift through it again while I'm off work. Yesterday I opened it and started pulling out the photos one by one and I realized that the family wouldn't have left them behind if they wanted them. There was a barn full of all kinds of things from their past and they wanted nothing that was inside. Whether or not they went through the barn before donating, they just decided that nothing in there was of value. So why wouldn't a family want to have this box of photos?

I came up empty handed. They appear genuinely happy. The father seems to be a photography buff and worked to create some interesting holiday photo-collages. There are boxes of slides and envelopes of negatives. There are family portraits taken in the living room with mother, father, children, cat and dog. I started studying the details thinking that there is something that I'm missing. Something I'm not seeing...something that I can't quite figure out.

Suddenly, I noticed that they all seem to be missing something. That's when I picked up the white out and sharpie next to me. Because if I'm going to do something as mischievous as mark up someone else's family photos, the least I can do is make it ridiculously obvious graffiti. I'm thinking Banksy obvious. I've since progressed to some acrylic paint and a fabulous black brush pen, but I'm still trying to have as much fun.
Having said all this, if you happen to recognize the family I've dubbed "The McKenzies" please let me know if they want their family heirlooms back.

The Decemberists - The Infanta. This has been in my head all day since listening to it this morning. It's about 1/15th of what I want the final image to be, but I was so anxious to get this picture out of my head that I wrapped it up there. I'll work on it some more later. More practice with the tablet...

Over the weekend my mom brought me a bag full of old National Geographics that I salvaged from my Grandma's house. I knew there was a reason I kept them around...great photos! So I went through and kept what I wanted to reference and draw from. I want to get more familiar with the Wacom tablet and practice my skillz on it...so here's tonights practice run. I call it Beefing.

This one is from a new series I'm doing about Rocco and Meeyoo. Which is to say, Roxy and Cleo...my sister's dog and my cat so named by my 2 year old nephew. They are not fond of each other, but they tolerate each other at family events while my nephew runs around and tries to catch them so he can hug them like the abominable snowman and George.

Speakeasy Holiday Show!

It's tonight people! Here are some photos of the stuff I'll be selling. Excuse the quality of some of them...I took it with my phone since I seem to have taken the batteries out of my camera to use in my Wii remote so that I could get both Luke and Darth Maul to raise the platform in the Emperor level. At the time it seemed REALLY important.

There will also be canvas bags with the city print and smaller canvas bags with the beaver print. My Christmas cards will also be there. I'll upload some of those images for you too...update...apparently I can't upload PDF's. Sorry guys. But if you take a look further down the blog you'll see the images that the cards use.

Apart from the framed prints, I'll also bring some unframed ones. I wanted to get those plastic sleeves to protect them...but where the hell do you get those? Comic book stores?

I'm working on my 12 days of Christmas cards. Hopefully I can get them done soon. I figure if I ink at least 2 drawings a night I should be done for the weekend and able to colour them over the weekend which makes them ready for selling next week. We'll see if it all goes to plan.

I had wanted to also do a Christmas in the city pack of cards, but I don't think that'll happen. Just too little time left. I also have to print more onesies and t-shirts, make up some bags, frame some of my prints and maybe do some lino cards. I bought some watercolour postcard stock from Woolfitts and maybe I can lino some of my Christmas prints onto it. We'll see.

I did do a couple of drawings for the Christmas in the City theme...this is the most finished one I have. It's not a final drawing by any means but a nice little sketch.

I'm going to Bedfordshire now. Night!

Hey Everyone, there's this super cool thing in Toronto called the Octopus Project that a couple of women named Catherine and Melanie have started up.

Basically you're given a subject or theme and you create based on that subject or theme and then they have an art show in the distillery district.

So I'm participating in this round which is the fourth time they've put on the show since they started it all.

IF - Punchline

This weeks theme is punch line and in light of Father's Day this past Sunday, I can't help but think of a joke my dad passed on to me. Here goes...

A new recruit on Captain Hook's vessel saw an opportunity to inquire as to the Captain's many injuries one fine day.

"Captain, how did you get the peg leg?"

"Yar! That was a good one! I was wrestling with a crocodile and it chomped me leg off." responded the hooked Captain.

"I see" responded the new recruit. "How about the hook then? How did you get that?"

"That was a fine day, that! I tried to chop off that crocodile's head and instead, he bit off me hand!"

"Wow!" Said the sailor as he mopped. "But Captain sir, how did you get the eye patch? Was it because of the crocodile?"

"Nah, It was the first day I got me hook and a bird pooped in me eye!"

And of course at this point you swing your hand hook-like towards your eye for emphasis.

IF - Forgotten

I've been working on a few different things at once lately. One thing that's been pushed aside and forgotten this past year is my Henri project. I won't go into too much detail, but someone asked me about him today and encouraged me to work on that project and it brought out all those exciting feelings that you get when you have a good one brewing. Idea that is. So I went home and drew this. Hopefully I'll get back on the Henri rail.

This weekend I finished up my screens for the show this fall. I'm excited! They turned out really well. I made a couple of different sizes for a couple of them just for the size difference between a onesie and a toddler. Anyway, here are a couple of tests I did at home. I really like the blocks of colour behind the print...I'm thinking that might be the way to go on the shirts...

So, I'm having problems with my scanner I think. This guy is in bright colourful bloom on my paper, but I scan it in and all of the sudden he's dull and molting. I adjusted as much as I could digitally, but there was only so much I could do without losing information. The orange wasn't even orange! I painted that in digitally...and the legs are supposed to be a bright coral colour. Anyone have any input? Is it the scanner or just that it's impossible to get those colours digitally?

IF - Baby

A friend of mine was asking me earlier this week what kind of an imaginary friend would we have in our "culture." The first thing I thought of was Pokaroo...followed by Snuffleuppagus. Unfortunately, copyright laws mean that she could draw neither for the art auction she was entering. My second thought was a saskwatch or an abominable snowman. She went with something completely different, but I wanted to carry out the image I had in my head.

While it's a bit of a stretch for the IF theme of baby, the wee girl is still someone's baby and that's my story and I'm stickin to it.

IF - Worry

What worries me right now is my Grandma. She's never seemed fragile to me until recently. She's the oldest person I know (92!) and the more I find out about her, the more I realize I don't know about her. Unfortunately it's getting harder and harder to get to know her better as she has dementia. To make matters worse she has recently had a small stroke. So she's been on my mind a lot recently and through no fault of her own, the cause of much stress and worry.

As as side note, this piece was all done digitally. Just for you Debbie!

My mom's making a beautiful quilt for the daughter of a friend of hers. She asked me to do the designs for the animals and here's the result so far. She's quilted the smaller squares and now she'll have to put all the pieces together. I didn't ask her permission to put this up, so I hope it's ok. Eh mom?

IF - Wrinkles

When I was thinking about the theme for Illustration Friday this week, I couldn't get the image of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys in old age sitting at a diner all weathered and worn from their adventures out of my head. I figured it would be appropriate for the diner to be in Florida. This was a little more comic book style for me. But I had a lot of fun doing it. Enjoy!

T-shirts for Hoopla! Hoopla is a artisan sale being held in September near Bloor and Keele/Dundas West. It's geared towards kids and mothers so most of these designs are for the youngin's. So, I came through and did the print with a screen. And I'm much happier with the result. Hopefully you are too! Most people seem to like the black and white better then the colour so...here it is! How it should have been from the start. I'm going to play with some funky paper next week.

So this is what I've been doing in printmaking the last two classes. While both came from looking at Jim Flora's work (http://www.jimflora.com/), the colour print worked better...could be the simplicity...could be less of a cumbersome block to work with...could just be more fun...could also be that I was more prepared for that print when I arrived in class. The black and white print...for some reason, I just couldn't get the ink to go on the page right...and it looked awful on these prints...when I had the same trouble with the colour ones tonight, it looked ok so I went with it. I think it's a result of the paint drying out...it comes out in big globs. Maybe I'll try some trials at home with my own paints. The studio that we have the class in is REALLY hot...even in minus 20 degree weather with 75-100KM hour winds it was still probably 30 in that class. I'm going to try the black and white print on a silk screen. Part of the problem with the print is that I cut out what I had originally planned to be the positive (or the part that the paint goes on) space. If I start fresh with the silk screen, I think it'll turn out better. I'll make some more lino's next week and then start on my silk screen...

I saw Sweeney Todd the musical last Tuesday and it was fantastic. I highly recommend it to anyone that can make it. I think it's playing to mid-December. The cast is pared down and each character plays 2 or 3 instruments. So the orchestra is pared down too. Not only do the instruments become part of the storytelling but all of the characters are always on stage so there's some great body language and acting throughout; even when an actor is not written into the scene. Anyway, go see it. I've been listening to the soundtrack all day and thought I'd draw up a character. This is Mrs. Lovett. She bakes the pies.

Here is an etching I did in my printmaking class. I really like the thick lines and linear shading of medieval prints. I also had just gotten back from Spain. I bought a Spanish deck of cards while I was there. They're slightly different from the normal card deck I'm used to. I decided to do a variation of the ten of coins but with a flamenco dancer. It turned out ok. The etching process as a whole is a long and tedious process, but I'm glad I got to try it once.

In honour of the season, I thought I'd provide some examples of flamingo Halloween costumes. As you can see, they're a little limited...so some of them are a bit poorly carried out but well...they are flamingos. They don't have thumbs. No thumbs!! Hope you have a good one!

Sorry it's been a while. Hopefully with the two classes I'm taking, it'll get updated more often. Here is a print of the lino block I made in printmaking class. It's a gold paint on a turquois paper...just in case it's hard to read. The middle portion is seperate from the top and bottom blocks which I just used as a border. Anyway, we're working on etching this week so hopefully I'll have something up next week.

While at art school, I took a class that had us draw Bargues. If you don't know anything about Bargue or his work...here's a link:

Basically it involved carefully measuring an original drawing with a small knitting needle and making points across a fresh page. These marks were then connected just like in connect the dots. Once we had the outline finished, we would work on the shading...which was done very carefully with a knife sharpened pencil. It was a long, but therapeutic process. We started off with smaller pieces...and still couldn't get them done in a semestre. This was my third piece (second semestre). It's not anywhere near complete, but I'm still pretty happy with it. I still have it mounted beside the original on my fibre board ready for me to go back to. Anyway, just thought I'd share it. Gotta get some new stuff up too...

So while we were away in L.A., Matt and I made it over to the San Diego Zoo. This was an ingenious idea on our part. There were hundreds of animals...wait...thousands...and although the zoo was a bit difficult to navigate around, the animals we saw were incredible. I was also reunited with my old love, the flamingo. I don't think I really knew why I loved them so much when I was a kid, but I was a fanatic. It wasn't just that they were pink and pretty...there had to be something more...and sure enough, staring at the birds in the lagoon it became clear. They are the silliest, showiest, most absurd bird I've ever seen. It was incredible the things they would do and the positions they could contort themselves into. And they would make so much noise and make such a fuss if a bird came near them that they didn't like. I think it's easy to tell why of all the animals at the San Diego Zoo the Dr. Seuss foundation chose to donate to the Flamingo Lagoon. They look like they leaped out of one of his books. Funny you should say that, Laura. Since I'm re-creating the puppet, I thought might re-design it as well. I started wondering how he would look if he were a drawn character rather then a puppet. And this is what I came up with. He's so awesome I'm almost thinking about going over to the other side.

This is a little design I've done for a flyer for my mom. I started the sketch on paper, scanned it into Photoshop and finished it there. I'm pretty happy as I haven't worked a lot in Photoshop and this design was pretty much redone in Photoshop because the initial drawing was a quick sketch. Anyway...that's it!

These are some designs I did for tshirts. The first set were the originals where I was basing the background colour on the colour of the shirt. The second set were what I created when I realized that I had to fill in the colour or it would be white. But it's still been a lot of fun! I'm halfway through another design and I have a fourth shirt that I'm pondering...

Here are some tests I did. I did the bouncing ball today. The other two with my puppet are from a while ago, but I couldn't get the software to work on my clunky computer. So I thought I'd post another drawing that I did when I was a youngin. Most of my stuff from when I was really young is in my school book at my rents. I gage this one to have been done at about age 10 or 11. I did this weird smiley face thing at the time that was a combination of Garfield's mouth and dead X type eyes. You can kind of see it in the bottom right hand corner. Then my best friend Nina stole it from me (and added another loop to the smile...pfff...she so had no idea) and I stopped doing it. So there's a small window when this could have been done. It was a copy of a MAD book illustrated by Sergio Aragones that was at my Grandparents place. It was probably my Uncle's. Anyway...blah blah blah...

Debbie always has these great drawings she posts from when she was a wee lass. These aren't nearly as old as hers, but it's from a young Sarah at the age of 15. Obviously I was obsessed with Froud (I still love his work really). I think I have some I can dig up from when I was around 10. Those days were mainly spent copying artist's drawings, but it was fun.

So this is what I did this weekend...well part of the weekend. I got this great anatomy book with photographs from the library. It has overlays with the skeletal and muscular systems. It's pretty impressive. Anyway I've got to work on my shading obviously. I'm too scratchy! I was just trying to get some semblance of tone down...Enjoy!

So it's December 1st. The greatest month of the year. Go Sagittarian monkeys! LOL. I've been working on stuff lately. A lot every night to practice because I really don't want to be a coordinator forever. Hopefully I'll develop some sort of skill I can show the director. LOL. It's been so long since I've just drawn for the sake of drawing. With a pencil. Whatever I wanted with no necessary purpose in mind. It's kinda nice. I went back and looked at my original storyboards for my short. Which has been put on hiatus by the way. I have to move in two months! Two months! Oh goodness. Anyway, I went back to my boards since working with the immaculate ones at work and saw how shameful they are. So I've been cleaning them up and redoing some. They don't follow the current story, but I figured I could move them around after and also that it's one more thing that I can show if it's in proper shape. Anyway, thought I'd share some of my favourites with you:

So my sister's work was given some land with the provision that they had to clean out the barn. Apparently it was just choca-block full of stuff. Among the stuff salvaged was some windows, some dresses, and a box full of photos. The photos are definitely a delight. Here's my favourite. It took me a while to realize she was holding a dog. I thought she was reading or knitting or something that women did in those days. lol. Anyway, thought I'd share it.

The Trouble with Tribbles

This is me playing around with hand drawn black ink drawings imported into Photoshop. I'm happy with how it turned out. Learned a few lessons and got some practice. If you don't know what a tribble is, then you are less of a nerd then I am. lol.

Illustration Friday: Quiet

My grandpa is a strong and quiet man. He was in the army and was the mayor of Cochrane just like was his father before him. He likes timing the sunset. And for all I know the sunrise...I've never gotten up earlier then him. He likes his music easy and quiet. Lol. He plays the trumpet and piano and trombone and sax... In fact, I'm pretty sure he's probably tried everything. He likes maps and reading them. He likes building things and fixing things. He owned an appliance store so he's a wiz with electrics. He likes being at our cottage which was built by our family and is on a small quiet lake that loons call from.

But the older I've gotten and the more I've listened I realized he's also a very funny man who likes telling his stories if he knows someone is interested in hearing. I've also learned that he loves his family more then anything else in the world. And lately I've learned just how strong he can be to be facing cancer and still be the calm, quiet, funny man that he is.
